On Feb. 10, the Student Activities Board hosted its annual “Stuff-a-Heart” event at the Student Center, drawing one of the largest lunchtime crowds of the semester.
What began as a simple, feel-good Valentine’s-themed activity quickly transformed into a vibrant display of campus spirit, as students lined up well before the official 11 a.m. start time, eager to participate.
By 10:45 a.m., a line had already formed, stretching across the lobby of the Student Center. Friends laughed together as they debated which color heart they would choose, while others scrolled through their phones, excitedly texting classmates to hurry before supplies ran out.
SAB anticipated a large turnout at the event, and had prepared over 150 plush hearts in four bright colors: red, blue, green, and yellow.
Within an hour, every single heart had been claimed.
The premise of the event was simple: students could select a heart, stuff it themselves, and take home a keepsake as a reminder of community and connection.
Music played softly in the background, SAB members enthusiastically welcomed participants, and the room buzzed with conversation.
In the middle of a busy academic week filled with assignments and exams, the event offered students a much-needed moment to pause and enjoy something lighthearted.
One student, Zoe, said she was excited to attend the event.
“I saw the poster online and knew I couldn’t miss this event,” she said while waiting in line with friends.
Zoe’s comment highlights the impact of effective campus promotion and the growing role of social media in increasing student engagement.
For some students, the event was more than just an opportunity to grab a free item, in which it was their first step into campus life.
Makayla, a student who had never attended an on-campus event before, expressed how meaningful the experience was for her.
“I’ve never been to an event on campus, and this felt amazing to be at,” she said.
And next time, students will want to arrive even earlier; because when it comes to campus traditions like this, the hearts truly do go fast.
