The University of Central Arkansas’ Gamma Eta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Incorporated and The Theta Mu Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha held tabling events at the Ronnie Williams Student Center Feb. 24 during x period.
Alpha Kappa Alpha celebrated its 52nd charter day with its table by not only having items but also having conversations.
“Charter Day is important because it highlights the purpose of every chapter,” member Sydney Harris said.
Harris said that it is to show appreciation for the women who brought the charter onto campus.
“There were 14 of them. Some of them went to UCA, some of them came from different chapters, different universities, and they just helped create the chapter here,” Harris said. “And so we use this day to celebrate those women and to show our purpose and service to our chapter.”
The Zeta’s table was called “Zeta Affirmations,” in which there were affirmations along with candy.
Zeta Phi Beta’s table also allowed them to talk with students about what they stand for.
“Heart and Health is important for us because it’s like a national thing that we do as an organization,” Zeta Treasurer Jada White said. “I think within us as a chapter, personally, since so many of our family members do have heart conditions, it kind of hit home for us as well to go ahead and highlight that awareness as well.”
White said they want to spread awareness so people can take control of their health before it is too late.
Harris said both sororities have a focus on the community and used its tables to show and continue that effort.
“We do service to all mankind, so we plant trees, we do different kinds of community service events,” Harris said. ”We just try to get all of our service out there to make sure we’re doing service in our local community and UCA is our local community.”
“We are a community-conscious, action-oriented organization,” White said. “Therefore, basically, all we do is service. We’re always going to put service first before anything.”
Harris and White said both sororities have events coming up that continue to have this focus.
“One thing that we do during Ski Week is recycling, so we do give people the opportunity to bring recycled goods.” Harris said. “We do canned goods and take them to the storm shelters, soup kitchens and things of the sort. We take clothing and take them to homeless shelters and different women’s centers.”
White said that they have multiple events in the upcoming months including an event Feb. 25.
“We have actually a panel conversation with a lot of our grad members being there, basically speaking out on how to be comforting within yourself, to love yourself,” White said.
