Students fiercely competed in the film club’s movie trivia night Feb. 27.
Junior Calee Goble said, “We really wanted to give the community a space where they can come and have fun and talk about what they love, which is movies. We pitched this last semester, and we were just trying to get some talk going on about the club.”
Goble said, “I don’t mean to gloat, but everyone that comes to this is really funny people. People that come to this have fun, laugh, they get inside jokes, make connections and make friends. I’ve met a lot of my friends through film club, so forming that connection and being able to have fun, that’s awesome.”
The trivia night was set up like an actual game show. There were five rounds, and in each round students had to answer questions correctly in order to move on. Round one consisted of trivia questions for a variety of different movies, and students could raise their hands, and if they got called on and answered correctly they moved on to the next round.
In the second round, two participants were called on so they could battle it out one-on-one, where the first to answer moved on. Unlike the first round, the second round featured partial movie posters, and students had to guess the movie based on the picture.
Goble said, “Movie posters is something that I had come across through the years, and that’s where I got the idea from. She also mentioned during the trivia that coming up with the movie posters was not easy and took a long time.
After round two the game began to ramp up. Round three also had the same setup, where people who moved on from the previous round were called on for a one-on-one. Instead of posters, there were funny descriptions of the movie, and students had to guess the correct movie to move on.
After the third round, Goble decided to switch it up by including a wild card round where students who didn’t make it past the first round could get onto the bracket for the later rounds.
“The wild card round was a chance for us to fill up the bracket because we had an odd number, and we needed to even it out — and so the wildcard was a chance for anybody who felt left out to get back in the game,” Goble said.
As the game progressed, and the number of competitors dwindled, the tensions began to rise.
Round four was the semi-finals, and on the screen were reviews from different movies, and the four students remaining battled to try to get into the final round.
Once the final round came along, the two students that remained were tasked with guessing the correct movie based on pictures of houses.
In the end, Senior Abby Bobo won.
Bobo said, “I wasn’t doing so hot in the first round, but I came back with a “Die Hard” question, so that really got my hopes up. I always know the answers to the questions I’m not being asked.”
