Rain couldn’t dampen the spirit as Relay For Life returned to UCA’s HPER Center on April 5, drawing an indoor crowd to raise funds against cancer.
Students, faculty, cancer survivors and caretakers turned out in great numbers to support the cause despite the stormy weather.
The UCA HPER hosted its annual Relay For Life fundraiser, featuring carnival games, local vendors, a farmers market and honor ceremonies.
Attendees enjoyed activities such as corn hole and a bounce house while learning about cancer awareness and the importance of community involvement.
The honor ceremonies served as a reminder of the lives touched by cancer, offering moments of reflection and solidarity.
Rebecca Thomas, a senior health sciences major and Relay For Life director, shared her excitement about the event’s success.
“Seeing how many people show up and the impact this event has on others beyond ourselves is so important to us,” Thomas said, “A majority of our committee members, including myself, have ties to cancer, and it’s impacted our lives in some capacity.”
Planning for the event began last May, with a dedicated team of volunteers working throughout the year to bring it to life.
From organizing logistics to recruiting vendors, the committee ensured a memorable experience for attendees.
“Our big event day means a lot to everyone involved,” Thomas said.
Greek organizations united to support the cause and fundraise, exemplifying the determination of the UCA community.
Their involvement added extra fun to the event, with BYX hosting a pie-in-the-face activity and Delta Zeta selling buttons.
All proceeds from these efforts contributed directly to the fight against cancer.
Carmen Gomez, a junior health administration major and event volunteer reflected on the importance of Relay For Life and its impact on the community.
“We’ve had a few guest speakers come and talk to us about how we’ve impacted them, and it really shows that our hard work doesn’t go to waste, and it truly does help others,” Gomez said. “I think this event shows that there are people who do care about this terrible disease and that we are actively working hard to put an end to it and just be a support group,” Gomez added.
The accompanying 5K run, traditionally part of the event, has been rescheduled for late April, offering even more opportunities for fundraising and fun.
Participants are encouraged to register early, as the rescheduled run is expected to draw a large turnout.
Thomas highlighted the year-round dedication to raising awareness and support.
“We have numerous fundraisers and tabling events on UCA’s campus and in the Conway community throughout the year,” Thomas said, “We’re fundraising actively all year long, and our biggest event of the year is usually each spring, specifically April 5.”
Beyond the 5K, the Relay For Life team members continue their efforts to engage the community and raise funds.
“We’re partnered with the Conway Farmers Market this year, with several of their vendors at our event now,” Thomas said. “On April 26, we’ll be their community focus vendor, representing our organization and cause to raise more funds.”
