Three Hendrix alumni turned their hobby of art and creation into a business — Wig Dog Press.
Claire Comeaux, Lexi Adams and Han Davis started making prints, stickers, buttons and more in February 2022.
“We’re printmakers, so we make block prints and we also do screen printing,” Comeaux said. “We like to use a lot of repurposed materials to print on. So particularly for screen printing, we print on thrifted shirts. For block prints, some of them are on paper and then we also like to print on vintage and repurposed fabric and use those to either make patches or wall hangings,” Comeaux said.
“We met at Hendrix and we’ve all been living in Little Rock since then,” Comeaux said. “We didn’t set out to start a business. I think we mostly just were already pretty interested in the idea of screen printing; we wanted to learn how to do it.
“We just kind of naturally decided to start going out to a couple of markets around and then just sort of took off from there,” Comeaux said.
Comeaux said Wig Dog Press uses “anything that’s already in circulation, just because the planet is dying.”
“It never even seems like an option to do anything else. Plus, like all three of us were big thrifters, to begin with,” Comeaux said.
Comeaux said Wig Dog Press does not have its own shop or warehouse; rather, all items are made in Adams’ bedroom.
“We will set up a fold-out table in her room and I’ll bring up all the prints and all the blank shirts from my house,” Comeaux said. “Even though she has a really small room it’s not the biggest issue. The hardest part of doing it this way — superduper DIY — is finding where to let them dry. So we just have a bunch of nails in her hallway and her living room. It’s pretty silly looking but it gets the job done.”
Wig Dog Press has a joint booth with Jenna Jones, also known as SlugKnives, in South Main Creative in Little Rock.
“We had two tiny shelves right by the entrance, so we had some prints and stickers and pens and stuff like that,” Comeaux said. “About two weeks ago, we moved into a significantly bigger space in South Main Creative, and it’s much nicer.”
Comeaux’s favorite art piece is a frog reading a book with the words “just sit with it” underneath.
“Personally, I’ve been in a really big rut as far as turning out new things and just making new things,” Comeaux said. “Lexi was just encouraging me. She was just like, ‘I like want to see one really small thing’ and she helped me come up with the words.”
Comeaux said Wig Dog Press’s journey has been a lot more than the three of them anticipated.
“It’s definitely been growing a lot more than we expected and it feels hopeful to be able to continue doing it almost exclusively,” Comeaux said.
Wig Dog Press will have a pop-up shop Feb. 11 at Lost Forty Brewing in Little Rock and will be at Demure Market in Conway on Feb. 17.
On March 16, Wig Dog Press will take part in the Big Gay Market Spring Awakening in Northwest Arkansas.
