Antonio Gibson will see his 2025 campaign come to an end early as the running back suffered a torn ACL in their victory against the Buffalo Bills.
The injury happened on a kickoff return in the second quarter where after taking a hit to the knee Gibson remained down on the field as Patriots trainers quickly came over to check on the star return man.
It would not take long for the team to officially announce that he would not return for the rest of the game.
On the following Monday tests would confirm that Gibson had in fact tore his ACL and would miss the remainder of the 2025 season, as the team officially put him on injured reserve.
This is quite a significant blow for the Patriots as Gibson had been one of the shining lights in the Patriots special teams, having returned a 90 yard kick for a touchdown in week two against the Dolphins.
Gibson, while officially the RB3 on the team, seemed to be in line to receive a higher snap share with starter Rhamondre Stevenson’s fumbling issues.
In response to the injury, the team activated Terrell Jennings from the practice squad to serve as the RB3 going forward.
In response to how the team would fill the gap on special teams, special teams coordinator Jeremy Springer had this to say, “It’s big, it was unfortunate to lose him. He was such a vital part of what we’ve been doing and a great leader in the backend with a lot of experience. So, it’s the next man up. That’s the way the mentality is in football and all sports. It’s next man up and we’re getting those guys ready to rock and roll. Hopefully, having him around he can still provide that leadership that he’s done so well in the last two years.”
