A kickoff to spring weather and on-campus unity began with an underhand pitch.
A night full of high-energy competitions following a week that immersed participants in their environment and got them connected with each other that hit the ground running with friendly competition.
On Friday, March 13, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. joined together to host team-based games such as relay races, water relay challenges, kickball, flag football and tug of war to end the week off on a high note.
This event promoted engagement and unity between organizations as well as the campus community as a whole to bring excitement to a stressful time of year.
The Beta Psi Chapter, Alpha Alpha, Theta Chapter Alpha and Kappa Alpha, all came together to collaborate for a week of events to create a space for students to get to know each other and enjoy the week.
“We know it’s close to mid term. People just need a little bit of time to decompress and have fun, so we came up with just some cool events to do and we thought this would be fun, because who doesn’t look like a field day?,” President of Theta Mu Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Kamryn Brown said.
Brown expressed that these collective events brought back the nostalgia of the fun you would have in elementary school especially this time of year.
“And we’re big kids, so why not? Just all sorts of fun stuff to kind of take your mind off of everything going on. Everybody’s busy, right, preparing for exams, and it feels like you’re at that point in the semester where you really need a break,” Brown said.
As the kickball competition amped up, opposing sides cheered and engaged in friendly banter as they stood on the softball field diamond.
As participants kicked foul balls, base hits and bunts teammates collapsed over from laughing and enjoying their time with each other.
“It’s a community event where we can engage with each other and just have fun. All week we’ve been participating and it’s been really great,” senior and kickball participant Amy Fall said.
Fall and other students expressed that their favorite event throughout the week had been music on the yard and they were looking forward to other events similar to these.
Brown explained the kind of leadership that she has been able to establish by being president of Theta Mu Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
“It’s really been pushing me to be in leadership and then knowing that other people actually trust me enough to lead them is really special. And actually building a relationship with all the girls in my chapter, now that I have the ability to mix, mingle, get to know them, learn more about them, it’s really fun. I’ve enjoyed it more than I thought I would,” Brown said.
This event, as well as the many others hosted this week, opened doors for a hopeful closure to the semester and brought a sense of competitive friendship to UCA’s campus.
