The 38th annual Miss Essence Scholarship Pageant is being held tonight at 7 p.m. in the Ida Waldron Auditorium in Main Hall. The Pageant is free to students with your UCA card.
Sponsored by Students for the Propagation of Black Culture, this pageant was initially put in place for the growth, both socially and academically, of African-American women on our campus.
“To give our undergraduate African-American women an opportunity to improve presentation skills, interview skills, enhance their self-esteem when on the bigger stage, gain valuable friendships and have an opportunity to earn funds for their educational career,” Angela Jackson, the Associate Dean/Director of Diversity and Community services, said.
The new Miss Essence will award a $1,000 scholarship prize and be expected to participate in community outreach programming aimed towards her platform, along with competing in the Miss UCA Pageant that is held each fall. There are thirteen contestants competing for over $2,000 in scholarships and Angela is extremely excited to have thirteen ladies competing this year because the past average has been six.
The pageant was organized by the Students for the Propagation of Black Culture, Multicultural Student Services.
